Florida Unemployment Levels Break More Records 

More than 505,000 first-time claims were made during the week ending on April 18, breaking the previous record set during the week ending on March 28. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, Florida’s increase in claims was larger than any other state. Of those applying for unemployment benefits between March 15 and April 21, only 15.9% have received payments.  

Florida To Put $75 Million Towards Improving Public Safety Facilities 

The Rebuild Florida Critical Facility Hardening Program has made $75 million available to local governments to improve “critical facilities that serve a public safety purpose”. The funds can be used to increase the resilience of potable water facilities, waste water facilities, police departments, fire departments, hospitals, emergency operation centers, and emergency shelters.  

Jacksonville Mayor Announces Details for Local COVID-19 Relief Program 

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry has released details about the Jacksonville COVID-19 Relief Program funded by a $160 million federal CARES Grant. As part of the plan, a stimulus package will offer $1,000 to 40,000 eligible residents, more testing sites will be added, and the city’s small business relief program will receive increased funding. 

Hillsborough County Emergency Policy Group Begin Discussions About Reopening Local Economy 

The Hillsborough County Emergency Policy Group met today and began to examine how to start reopening the local economy. Hillsborough County Director of Public Health Dr. Douglas Holt has announced that new cases have slowed, though only about 1% of the population has been tested. A scaled and coordinated approach to reopening the economy was generally supported during discussions.

There are now 28,832 cases throughout the state of Florida and 960 deaths. In Duval County, there are 937 cases and 17 deaths. In Hillsborough County, there are 988 cases and 21 deaths. In Orange County, there are 1,260 cases and 29 deaths. In Pasco County, there are 221 cases and 3 deaths. In Pinellas County, there are 649 cases and 21 deaths.
