Updated Florida Unemployment Numbers

Florida has released updated numbers about unemployment claims and payments throughout the state. 1.5 million claims have been filed since March 15, but only 40,193 applicants have received benefits. Additionally, only 162,039 claims have been processed for eligibility. The state has launched a new website with daily updated data. 

Tampa Bay Times Receives $8.5 million Loan From SBA

The Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program has issued an $8.5 million loan to the Tampa Bay Times. The newspaper has announced that the funds will offset their revenue losses for approximately three months, but that home delivery days will remain reduced. Chairman and CEO, Paul Tash, assured readers that the loan will not compromise the Times’ commitment to independent reporting. 

Jacksonville Mayor: Local Testing Reaching Recommended Threshold

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry announced today that COVID-19 testing in Duval County is approaching the daily recommended number. Researchers from Harvard University recommend a daily testing rate of 152 tests per 10,000 people; that makes the recommended testing rate for Jacksonville 1,460 tests every day. Mayor Curry reported that the current testing capacity is “in excess of 1,500 tests per day”. 

USF Researching COVID-19 Hotspots in Tampa

Researchers from USF’s College of Public health are working to identify COVID-19 hotspots in Tampa. The data from the research project will be used by hospitals and health departments to improve efforts to address the pandemic. Tampa residents are asked to participate in this survey as part of the project:https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/8cba190b4014460e9b9fe19c9c0862ad.

Updated Numbers   

There are now 26,660 cases throughout the state of Florida and 789 deaths. In Duval County, there are 863 cases and 15 deaths. In Hillsborough County, there are 971 cases and 19 deaths. In Orange County, there are 1,204 cases and 23 deaths. In Pasco County, there are 207 cases and 3 deaths. In Pinellas County, there are 604 cases and 16 deaths.
