Hillsborough County Schools May Finish School Year Online
Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent Addison Davis has indicated that county schools may continue remote teaching through the rest of the school year. On yesterday’s Facebook Live with Mayor Castor, Superintendent Davis reported that Hillsborough is prepared for this possibility and is also preparing to conduct summer classes via online learning. Graduation ceremonies may be pushed back to July.
Efforts to Protect Small Businesses in Hillsborough
Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to send a letter to Governor DeSantis to seek protection for commercial renters. Commissioners sought clarification as to whether small businesses can receive the same eviction protections as apartment renters under an executive order issued last week. Hillsborough County is also seeking protection against rent hikes and requested a mobile field hospital from the state.
Sports Tournaments Re-scheduled, Cancelled
Golf’s British Open and tennis’ Wimbledon have both officially been cancelled. This is the first time these tournaments have been cancelled since World War II. In other golf news, the Masters has been rescheduled to November 9-15, the U.S. Open has been rescheduled to September 14-20, and the PGA Championship has been rescheduled to August 3-9. As for tennis’ U.S. Open, the tournament’s dates have not yet been affected. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where the U.S. Open takes place every year, has been transformed into a makeshift hospital.

Japan has declared a state of emergency and issued a nearly $1 trillion stimulus package. China has reported its first day with no new COVID-19 deaths since January; travel restrictions have been lifted in Wuhan.
